Apart from the fact that this university offers the exact programm I have longed to do at masters level, my research shows that this is one of the oldest university in the country with qualified English teaching programm. I believe this will be a very condusive enevironment for my studies. Most importantly the annual is affordable for me. In order to cope with health problems worldwide, particularly in developing countries, it is necessary to understand the variety of local, regional and global problems while seeking scientifically reliable and socioeconomically feasible ways to solve or mitigate them through research and education.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, infectious diseases still causes majority of deaths. The 2006 UN Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimated that 63% of all people infected with HIV worldwide (24.7 million) were living in sub-Saharan Africa, and that the majority of deaths globally occurred here (72%, 2.8 million).This clearly shows that there is high burden of infectious diseases within this region which needs immediate attention. However, the region has inadequate health workers who can assist in coming up with effective research to address this problem. This has seen many countries within the region failing to achieve millennium development goals especially goal no 6 aimed at reducing infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis.
Looking at the Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal no 3, health interventions in this region need to be re-organized in order to meet people’s needs and expectations, so as to make them more socially, relevant and more responsive to the changing world, while producing better outcomes. This can only be achieved by having specialists in the field of Global Health with wide knowledge in infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This is the main purpose that has motivated me to have a desire to study Masters Degree in Global Health so that I can contribute towards improvement of health indicators within my country and in Sub-Saharan African region.
It is only health systems staffed with sufficient health workers having the research skills and knowledge that can achieve better health outcomes. I hope by studying Global Health, I will be equipped with such desired knowledge and be able to contribute towards Sustainable Development Goal no 3.3 aiming at ending the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases by the year 2030 as proposed by United Nations. This is my main objective for applying Global Health course.
This ambition can only be achieved by studying with an internationally recognized institution with good reputation. After wide consultation, I have noticed that South East University has that desired quality and can equip me with such knowledge. The institution is said to have all required characters and specialists in this field of my desire. I hope, if considered and offered a place at this institution, my desire will be fulfilled. Therefore, my second objective is to get trained in Global Health from an International recognized institution like yours.
My special interest is to acquire knowledge, competencies and attitudes to optimise health care through comprehensive understanding of Global Health issues and measures that can be taken to address health problems in Sub-Saharan Africa in order to promote, restore, and optimise health of the population. This will assist me to meet my plans of becoming an International researcher in Global Health issues. I have also plans of becoming an academician as I will voluntarily work with one of the local medical school so that I should transfer the knowledge I will gain to upcoming health workers in my country.
